Students in Space

My students from the 5th Year and I have read the book "Students in Space". After reading it and correcting the exercises, we have developed a nice project in the school's lab. The students had to rewrite their own story using a powerpoint presentation.

Check one of my students' work:

Food Groups

I have developed a project with my students from the 3rd year about food groups. The computer teacher from the school where I work prepared a chart divided in VEGETABLES, FRUIT, DAIRY, CEREAL, MEAT and FISH. The students were supposed to find some images that represented each group and put them inside the supermarket cart. They had a lot of fun and we could learn a little bit more about food groups through English.

Picture Dictionaries

Hello everyone!
I was visiting the blog http://teacherpedrobrandao.blogspot.com/ and I saw a very good post with a list of dictionaries (online dictionaries, pictionaries, thesaurus, idioms and idiomatic expressions, etc). I would like to recommend the picture dictionaries because I think they can help us a lot in order to present new vocabulary or prepare activities for our students.

E-book

The computer class teacher from the school where I work recommended the site www.youblisher.com to create e-books. She has already developed great projects there.
I've tried to use it and it's rather easy. The following link is an example of what can be done.

The use of technology in the classroom: challenges for teachers

Today a co-worker and I presented at X YILTS (Yázigi Language Teaching Seminar) a workshop called "The use of technology in the classroom: challenges for teachers". I would like to share some of our ideas. If you are interested in getting more information about the activities presented in the workshop, send me a message so that I can give you more details.

The importance of technology in the classroom is the fact that it can bring: (1) more levels of interactivity and interaction; (2) greater dissemination of work done in class; (3) contact with real situations in the classroom; (4) the use of different sensory stimuli, such as: videos, images, sounds, music, games and multimedia animations.

Some problems related to the use of technology in the classroom:
- the danger of changing the focus of the classroom from the student to the teacher when we use the interactive whiteboard;- the risk of not having information gap for activities since the content is to be used in the public domain (example: activities with songs that students know or movies they have already seen);- technical problems such as scratched CD/DVD, bad internet connection, power outages, glitches in the interactive whiteboard, etc.
Some examples of resources we used in the classroom as well as activities that we developed in our school that can be related to the benefits pointed out above:
Chatroom, e-mail, skype, social network can promote a better way for the students to interact. Examples:
- Youtube can be used to help the students' work to be spread. Example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=da5aZ-NLuVM

- Some sites enable students to have contact with real situations in the classroom. Examples: http://www.real-english.com/reo/46/unit46.htmlhttp://www.ted.com/talks/ethan_zuckerman.html;http://www.voki.com/
- Some sites enable teachers to use different sensory stimuli, such as: videos, images, sounds, music, games and multimedia animations. Example: http://warmupsfollowups.blogspot.com/2011/05/tooth-fairy-princess-and-frog-ella.html

My favourite things - 5th Grade

I developed with students of the fifth year the project "My favorite things". It was developed in the computer lab and aimed to enable the students to share with colleagues their preferences. The first step was to show students my powerpoint with my preferences. With this model, students could use their creativity to build their own presentations that were saved on the school website.
See some examples below.

Vejam alguns exemplos:

About me - 3rd Grade

In the third year classes, I developed with the computer class teacher the project "About Me"In the classroom, we had worked with the days of the week and the numbers / measures. In their notebooks, the students wrote about their height and their favorite day of the week. The computer class teacher prepared in advance the powerpoint above and the students went to the computer room to type their texts.
See some productions below.

Interesting site!!

The computer class teacher from the school I work found a blog that had a self-assessment work done with elementary students. They entered the site www.voki.com, created their "Voki" (a sort of "avatar") and recorded a self-assessment message. I became interested in this work and did a "Voki" for me.
The site has several interesting features. I'll try to use them in my classes!
Check my voki:

Indiscipline and sense of shame

I read the article "Indiscipline and sense of shame" of Yves de La Taille, published in "Indiscipline in schools: theoretical and practical alternatives," organized by Professor Julio Groppa Aquino and I recommend this book.
Among the subjects explored in the text is indiscipline in the classroom. In this section of the article, the author presents the thesis that the modern man became more interested in the private space than in the public space. The consequences of this fact, according to DeLa Taille, are: (1) people start to show disregard for the space in question (when, for example, people throw garbage on the ground) and (2) the moral shame tends to give the looks of private sphere, making the "public eye" illegitimate.
At school, the consequence noted by the author is the fact that students come to despise the function (by definition public) of the teacher. The teacher must be imposed by their nature otherwise they can not get anything from their students. The solution proposed by him is to strengthen the student's sense of dignity as a moral being.
In the words of De La Taille, "the school has just a solution: to remember and recall their students and the society as a whole that their main purpose is preparation for citizenship. And to be a citizen, you need solid knowledge, memory, respect for public space, a minimum set of standards for interpersonal relations, and ethical dialogue. There is no democracy if there is complete disregard for public opinion."

Food for thought!!!
