Today a co-worker and I presented at X YILTS (Yázigi Language Teaching Seminar) a workshop called "The use of technology in the classroom: challenges for teachers". The importance of technology in the classroom is the fact that it can bring: (1) more levels of interactivity and interaction; (2) greater dissemination of work done in class; (3) contact with real situations in the classroom; (4) the use of different sensory stimuli, such as: videos, images, sounds, music, games and multimedia animations.
Some problems related to the use of technology in the classroom:
- the danger of changing the focus of the classroom from the student to the teacher when we use the interactive whiteboard;- the risk of not having information gap for activities since the content is to be used in the public domain (example: activities with songs that students know or movies they have already seen);- technical problems such as scratched CD/DVD, bad internet connection, power outages, glitches in the interactive whiteboard, etc.
Some examples of resources we used in the classroom as well as activities that we developed in our school that can be related to the benefits pointed out above:
- Chatroom, e-mail, skype, social network can promote a better way for the students to interact. Examples:
