I developed a project with my students of the second year about TOYS. It was very productive and very fun because they did many activities such as drawing, typing and playing games. With the help of the computer teacher we prepared a nice presentation of the students' production.
The first step was to review the vocabulary studied in class with some flashcards. The material adopted in the school is the Incredible English, which has a series of flashcards with the vocabulary related to toys. The ones who need these pictures can visit the site http://www.oup.com/elt/global/products/incredibleenglish/level1/dictionary/unit4/PICTURE DICTIONARY to get the images.
Some games I did with my students were:
- Flash flashcards: I showed the images very quickly and they had to say in English what they had seen.
- Memory game: I showed a sequence of images and hid it. I asked the students to try to repeat orally the same order shown.
- Uncovering the card: I showed only a part of the flashcard and asked the students to try to guess which toy it was.
- True or False: I got a card without seeing the image. I said "I've got a. ..". If my sentence was correct according to the image that students could see they had to say "true", if I was wrong they had to say "false."
- Chinese whispers: I showed a student from the first row a card. He/she had to say the word to the classmate who was behind him/her colleagues. They had to keep doing it until they reached the student from the last row who should tell the class the word he/she had heard. Finally, we checked if the word was the same the first student said.
After the games, students told me what their favorite toy was and drew it. In the computer lab, they typed a short paragraph on their favorite toy. The computer class teacher scanned the drawings of the students and prepared a presentation to put on the school website.
